The Malaysian government has designated 2007 as visit Malaysia year. The country is expected to attract more than 20 million visitors and earn about RM50 billion from tourism related activities. An important component in the tourism industry is the human resource. The human resource factor plays an eminent role in promoting the image of the country as a top tourism spot. Tourists do not just come for the facilities and attractions. They want to be treated right and well. A good command of the English language is always regarded as an asset for personnel in the tourism industry since most visitors do not speak Bahasa Melayu, the national language. What is ‘English for Tourism’? An Updated ‘Grounded Review’ of the Literature

This paper reports the results of a replication of an exploratory study conducted five years earlier that sought to answer the deceptively simple question: 'What is English for Tourism?'. The original study created a corpus of 348 texts that served as a representative sample of all EfT literature available on Google Books and Google Scholar at the time, including both teaching material and academic literature. A qualitative analysis, which categorized and coded the corpus in accordance with grounded theory, revealed two categories of teaching material-those written for local markets and those written for international markets-as well as two parallel research traditions within this niche of applied linguistics: studies that aim to understand and inform the teaching and learning of English for tourism (EfT) and studies that seek to understand and explain the English of tourism (EoT). A quantitative analysis using Microsoft Excel and the free concordancer LancsBox confirmed and qualified these thematic categories via a comparative analysis of the EfT and EoT sub-corpora. The present study employed the same sampling frame to update the existing corpus with 543 texts published or made accessible online over the last five years. The same mixed-methods data analyses were performed on the expanded corpus. The results of the replication reconfirm the semantic, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological differences and interdependencies between EfT and EoT found during the first study. The results also reveal recent shifts in international and national discourses and expose further gaps in the existing body of literature.

Language has great importance in the dialogue and understanding between tourists and tourist facilities. And the English today is international language, and most of the tourist establishments require employees to speak English in addition the local language of the country because the English now has become the familiar language for almost all human beings. There are a lot of institutes that give courses in language. As the tourism need to friction with foreigners directly so we will focus in this paper on the importance of the English language in the bi Sector Development. This paper also encourages practitioners to pay attention on the language issue. Collaboration among educational providers and tourism organizations is required if they want to compete in the global market.

Tourists' Perception of Using The English Language In The Tourism Industry

The study aimed at exploring tourists' perception of using the English language in the tourism industry. The subjects were 126 tourists participating in the study including (53.2%) male and (46.8%) female tourists. Questionnaires were mailed to the respondents to collect data. The questionnaire was self-developed with a (.935) Cronbach's alpha. The participants have different educational qualifications including yramirp / yrarrmrairp 0.8%), Secondary (5.6%), Diploma (23.8%), Undergraduate (35.7%) and Postgraduate (34.1%). The data was descriptively analyzed to find the mean and standard deviation of the respondents' perception of using the English language in the tourism industry. The results of the study indicated that the English language would play an important role in the tourism industry. According to the respondents' perception, the language could be essential in sociocultural, management, and marketing/promotion, accordingly.

The 8th International Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) Seminar -Aligning Theoretical Knowledge with Professional Practice Needs Analysis on English Language Use in Tourism Industry

Needs analysis plays a vital role in developing English for specific purposes curriculum. This study surveyed the needs, functions and problems of English language use by 40 tourism employees. A questionnaire was used and data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that speaking is most important, then listening, reading and writing. The three most relevant functions in using English language were giving information, followed by providing services, and offering help. English use problems included; inability inappropriate words and expressions, inadequate vocabulary, and lack of grammar knowledge.
