Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day recognizes the officers lost to suicide, raises awareness about suicide in law enforcement and reminds officers and their families that they are not alone.AMU’s Dr. Michael Pittaro addresses the #MentalHealth crisis among correctional officers, including the high rate of suicide. Guess what? The leading cause of stress and burnout does NOT come from working with dangerous criminal offenders. https://ow.ly/vHZB50S2Qro#LawEnforcement #SuicideAwareness #SuicidePreventionMonth

Local service shoutout!Have you heard of the Co-Responder Unit, or CRU?One of the main goals of CRU is to divert community members from unnecessary emergency room visits and jail. CRU is able to do this by triaging the behavioral health situation, connecting community members to the next best service, and following up within 48 hours with any additional support or services needed. This service decreases the backlog in emergency rooms or jail, and reduces repeat calls for service for our law enforcement officers. Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3T2vk1N

Marysville unfortunately saw a 189% increase in youth criminal filings in 2023 compared to 2021. In 2021, we had 79 juvenile arrests, in 2023, we saw 228 arrests. Assaults and domestic violence led the pack of offenses, but we also saw serious crimes like vehicular homicide, reckless burning, robbery, and display of weapons with intent to intimidate. We first saw these increases after a legislative change in 2021 that effectively prohibits police officers from questioning juveniles once probable cause for an arrest is established. We are concerned about these trends! #publicpolicy #juvenilejustice

For the purpose of healthcare coordination, 💯 yes. I’m strong advocate that health benefits and care coordination should not be disrupted when youth enter the system. But are there risks in sharing the entirety of the Juvenile Record? “Juvenile records encompass various types of records, including a juvenile's official juvenile court file, their social file, which contains probation counselor records and reports, and any other records of a juvenile justice or care agency in a juvenile's case. The term "juvenile justice or care agency" is defined to include a wide range of entities, including juvenile detention facilities.”This is an important step in healthcare continuity of care, and I urge legislators to work with our MCO partners to be thoughtful of the risks of juvenile records entering health information systems, such as third-party records requests, provider network access to patient records, records retention and destruction policies, and what measures are taken to purge the health record when a person’s juvenile record is sealed.

QUESTION - What are your views about this?I recently came across a video showing prisoners being released early, including one individual convicted of assaulting a Police Officer. Watching this, I can't help but feel deeply disappointed. What kind of message does this send about the value of law enforcement and justice? When individuals who harm those who protect and serve are allowed back on the streets prematurely, it raises serious concerns about the example being set for future offenders. Are we prioritising convenience over accountability?Early releases like these risk undermining the safety of our communities and the efforts of those who put their lives on the line every day to uphold the law. We must ensure that justice is served fully and fairly, even if that means spending money to build more prisons.#Justice #LawEnforcement #Accountability #PublicSafety
